Fahrenheit Picnic - Igniting a Passion for Science in Gdansk

News|

Nearly 5,000 attendees visited Gradowa Hill in Gdańsk for the 4th edition of the Fahrenheit Science Picnic, an event initiated by the Fahrenheit Union of Universities and Hevelianum. For the second consecutive year, Aramco served as the main partner, actively supporting the development of STEM education in the Pomerania region.

Gradowa Hill: Scientific Hub of Gdańsk

On Sunday, May 25th, Gradowa Hill transformed into a meeting spot for young enthusiasts of science and creativity. The organizers prepared a range of interactive stations for the youngest guests, where they could not only observe scientific demonstrations but also conduct experiments themselves and test their knowledge in various tournaments and quizzes. Within the science village, comprised of over 60 specially prepared tents, visitors could immerse themselves in the world of fascinating experiments in chemistry, biology, and physics, as well as learn how to maintain their health in zones dedicated to dietetics and first aid.

Attractions from Aramco

The picnic also featured attractions prepared by Aramco, a partner of the Daniel Fahrenheit Union which represent local universities: the Medical University, University of Technology, and the University of Gdańsk. This year, at the Aramco stands, young enthusiasts of modern technologies discovered the secrets of robotics, engineering, and racing sports. There was also space for young artists and explorers, with creative art workshops, sports activities, and educational opportunities awaiting them.

The innovative robot, equipped with an advanced artificial intelligence system for detecting and documenting damage to urban infrastructure, garnered significant interest from visitors. This novel solution not only independently identifies problems in road and sidewalk surfaces but also precisely determines their location and suggests appropriate repair actions. The presentation was conducted by young scientists – representatives of Poland at the World Robot Olympiad.

Another attraction was an outdoor bicycle station where, using their own muscle power, picnic participants could test their fitness, generate energy, and use it to prepare refreshing lemonade. It was an excellent opportunity for competition and to quench their thirst after physical exertion.

In the Children's Corner, an actor from the Wybrzeże Theatre read the book "Professor's Good Advice" to children, in which the friendly Professor Główka amusingly taught about environmental protection and responsible treatment of animals. Additionally, children participated in the scientific show "ARRR! Tales of the Oceans," where two pirates presented the 3R principle: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, promoting an ecological lifestyle.

However, the highlight of the event was the presentation of a Formula 2 engine, the construction and operation of which was explained to aspiring motorsport enthusiasts by a graduate of Gdańsk University of Technology and a former member of the university's Formula Student team. Thanks to this, event participants could momentarily transport themselves to a racetrack or an engineering laboratory.

This year's edition of the Fahrenheit Picnic is over, however the memories and smiles of young science enthusiasts will remain with us for a long time.
